Biggest Loser Couples - Season 5 - Week 5 - 1/29/08
Even though I knew it was coming, I still can’t believe they did it. Biggest Loser Couples is officially eliminating one contestant at a time now - breaking up the couples along the way. I think this is an awful twist to an otherwise great show.
Reality gameshows have become a little too cookie cutter. Sure they throw the little twists and surprises at you to keep you entertained, but at the end of the day it’s all the same format. Someone gets voted off every episode. Biggest Loser Couples had a chance to be different. Seeing a couple have to work together to stay in the competition was intriguing. Seeing them broken apart with one staying and one going…well that’s just gut-wrenching. Maggie is going to be miserable next week, and a good 15 minutes of the episode will probably be focused on that. Honestly, that’s not why I am watching. Same goes with what the preview of the coming episode suggested - that we will see a video from Kelly’s boyfriend, and the resulting fallout between Paul and Kelly. What’s the point? What does that have to do with weight loss?
Everything that The Biggest Loser has been doing over the past couple seasons has been interesting enough. The challenges and tempations are top notch. The weigh-ins and voting process are always interesting. Why do you need to throw in additional drama, especially when it takes away from what the contestants are trying to accomplish?
I think they should have kept the couples together through the very end, and wish they had found another way to lengthen the season. They could have done a twist on season 4 - each couple that was voted off early in the season could have gone onto a “secret” team that was training by itself - only to come back and surprise the remaining contestants later in the season. That would have added a few more episodes, and I would have liked to see how the contestants who were kicked off responded.
Instead, the nature of the show has changed. For this season, it’s not going to be as interesting to see one person win. I would have prefered to see one couple go the whole way together. Much more uplifting.
