NFL Super Bowl XLII: Patriots do a 180

Super Bowl XLII: Patriots do a 180

That title has two meanings: The first is that the Patriots did a 180 degree turn from what they’ve done all season - i.e. win. The second meaning is that they are now on the opposite side of where they were in Super Bowl XXXVI, where the Pats shocked the heavily favored Rams.

Now, I was going to write more about that second point, but it’s already been written by one of TVBigBoard’s favorite columnists, Bill Simmons. The parallels are insane, right down to the score almost being the same.

Seriously, what a crazy upset. Was there anyone outside of New York that predicted this win in their out loud voice? It just did not seem possible 24 hours ago. As someone who’s not really a fan of either team (but lives in NY), I was torn. Part of me wanted to see the perfect season happen, but another part of me liked the idea of the big upset. The Giants upsetting the Pats was especially appealing since Boston sports fans have become the new Yankees fans - only worse….the Boston fan base has that history of tough times. The recent success of their teams has been a gift that many of their fans have taken for granted, becoming extremely cocky in the process. Last night was a nice little dose of humility for those people…who I’m sure will be in full spin mode this week.

In any case, congratulations to the Giants and the hard-core Giants fans who believed in their team all along. Eli Manning’s play in the 4th quarter (where he broke away from like 3 Patriots defenders and completed that pass to David Tyree) was symbolic of the the Giants whole season. Just a gutsy play for what has proven to be a gutsy team.

If you had said to me on Friday that Eli Manning would be the Super Bowl MVP, I would have laughed and walked away.

How many beers will I drink on Super Bowl Sunday?

I was definitely in the 10-12 range…it would have been more if it weren’t for all the Jaeger-bombs!
