Final 10 Girls Perform

Final 10 Girls Perform - 2/28/07

While still strong, the girls came down a bit from last week’s performances. The judges are showing that they aren’t willing to give anyone a free pass, and continue to send mixed messages to some of the performers. It’s interesting: the judges continue to talk about how this is a singing competition, and constantly discuss pitch and tone in their critiques. Every other word out of Randy’s mouth is about someone’s “pitchiness”. But the competition is in the hands of an audience that doesn’t give as much weight to such details. In general, the audience is looking at the overall performance. Someone having fun up on stage is given a little more weight than someone who sang good but had the “deer in the headlights” look. In any case, with a few exceptions, it seems like the final 12 is still up for grabs.

Some quick thoughts on how each girl did:

Gina Glocksen: I’m with Simon. Had she come out in something other than an evening gown, she would have nailed the whole performance.

Alaina Alexander: A very sweet dedication to her mom was followed by a so-so performance. I’m honestly not sure she makes it through tonight.

Lakisha Jones: It will be interesting to see if she takes the “start acting like you belong here” comments to heart.

Melinda Doolittle: I would never in a million years call in a vote for American Idol, but Melinda’s performance last night was about as close as I’ve come to doing so.

Antonella Barba: She’s probably safe for at least another week.

Jordin Sparks: One of the questions I may post for the results show tonight - who’s going to cry more, Jordin or Sanjaya?

Stephanie Edwards: What can you say? She’s good. Expect more of the same.

Leslie Hunt: The only reason I want this girl to stick around is when the camera cuts to her father in the audience while Simon is bashing her performance.

Haley Scarnato: She deserves another week.

Sabrina Sloan: She’s good, I just wasn’t jumping off my couch or anything.

Betting Recap:

During the Wednesday night performances (when the girls perform), will any of the following events happen?

- Paula did give a standing ovation for Stephanie Edwards’ performance.
- Simon did insult some outfits, mainly Lakisha’s.
- Randy did use the words “It was just alright for me”. He snuck it in there while critiquing one of the performances.
- Both Jordin and Haley cried on stage.
- Randy did not give a shout out to the “Dawg Pound”.

On the Wednesday night episode of American Idol, Lakisha will:

This question referred to where Lakisha would be in the singing order. She sang third, so the correct answer was “somewhere in the middle”.
